Diese Profilansicht des ersten Flötisten und Konzertmeisters der Paris Opéra, Joseph-Henri Altès, ist eines der vielen Porträts von Musikern von Degas. Als "kleiner Witz" hing Lousine Havemeyer, der ursprünglich das Gemälde besaß, zwischen zwei Renaissance-Portraits und freute sich, zu finden, dass "der moderne Meister seine eigenen hielt."
