In questa scena, le stampe a buon mercato e sfocate — le litografie colorate del pittore fiore Pierre-Joseph Redouté — sono accoppiate con un cavallo di dinastia Tang alla moda e i tessuti giapponesi incisi sul tabellone del bollettino per digitare un collezionista vecchio stile, accumulando ossessivamente una serie di opere d'arte. La raffigurazione di individui, interrotti a compiti tra le impostazioni che rivelano indizi sul loro carattere, è stata sviluppata da Degas in numerosi dipinti di figura del 1860 e dei primi anni 1870.
