L'impostazione di questa scena informale può essere uno studio di artista. L'uomo a destra è forse il pittore Émile Lévy, che era uno studente all'Accademia francese di Roma quando Degas lo incontrò alla fine del 1850. Nessun nome è stato proposto per l'uomo sulla sinistra.
