La sorella maggiore di Berthe Morisot è mostrata nel soggiorno della casa della sua famiglia a Parigi in questo ritratto incompiuto di Degas. Preceduto da diversi studi preparatori, tra cui due disegni e un pastello, che sono anche nella collezione del Museo, il lavoro è stato favorito da Mary Cassatt, che ha osservato: "È molto nello stile di un Vermeer e abbastanza interessante, molto tranquillo e riposante. È una bella immagine."
