Peu après son achèvement vers 1877, Degas donna cette image à Alexis Rouart et à sa femme. Rouart était un vieil ami et ancien camarade de classe, mais Degas était encore plus proche de son frère Henri, un peintre amateur dont l'impressionnante collection d'œuvres de Degas comprenait les grands danseurs pratiquant au bar (29.100.34). Danseur Sur scène plus tard passé à Alexis Son fils Henri.
