Questa è la prima rappresentazione di Degas di una classe di danza. Poiché l'artista non aveva ancora i privilegi di andare dietro le quinte dell'Opéra di Parigi, i suoi soggetti vennero nel suo studio per posare. Queste sessioni hanno fornito molti grandi disegni di studio, che Degas successivamente adattato per altre composizioni. Alla fine del 1870, spiegò: "Ho dipinto così tanti di questi esami di danza senza aver visto che ne sono un po' vergognoso".
