Esta es la primera representación de Degas de una clase de baile. Debido a que el artista todavía no tenía privilegios para ir detrás del escenario en el Paris Opéra, sus súbditos llegaron a su estudio para plantear. Estas sesiones dieron muchos grandes dibujos de estudio, que Degas posteriormente se adaptó a otras composiciones. A finales de los años 1870, explicó: "He pintado tantos de estos exámenes de baile sin haber visto que estoy un poco avergonzado de ello".
