Degas ha usato un formato di fregio allungato per più di quaranta scene di prove effettuate nel corso di due decenni. Questa è una delle prime opere del genere; è stata preceduta da The Dance Lesson (ca. 1879, National Gallery of Art, Washington). Qui, il muro angolato in primo piano spegne la giustapposizione impressionante di un contrabbasso e un ballerino seduto, piegato per legare i lacci della sua slipper. L'analisi tecnica rivela che Degas ha dipinto la composizione complessa in virtualmente una singola campagna con solo revisioni minori.
