Degas benutzte ein langgestrecktes Friesenformat für mehr als vierzig Probenszenen, die im Laufe von zwei Jahrzehnten entstanden sind. Dies ist eines der ersten solcher Werke; es wurde vor The Dance Lesson (ca. 1879, National Gallery of Art, Washington). Hier setzt die abgewinkelte Wand im Vordergrund die auffallende Gegenüberstellung eines Kontrabass und einer sitzenden Tänzerin ab, um die Spitzen ihres Pantoffels zu binden. Die technische Analyse zeigt, dass Degas die komplexe Zusammensetzung in praktisch einer einzigen Kampagne mit nur geringfügigen Revisionen gemalt hat.
