Questo studio risale agli anni di Degas come studente di arte a Parigi. Piuttosto che iniziare con una tela fresca, ha dipinto il nudo sopra un altro studio di figura, che è parzialmente visibile attraverso lo strato di vernice esterna. I piedi e le dita della figura precedente, forse lo stesso modello, possono essere visti nell’angolo in basso a sinistra, appena sotto la testa del nudo maschile, mentre il suo volto barbuto appare nella zona del piede del nudo reclinabile. Dipingere il modello in una posizione incline può aver fornito a Degas l'opportunità di rendere una figura come se morto o ferito, uno che appare in una scena di guerra.
