Quando Degas fece questa foto nel 1871, l’opera di Giacomo Meyerbeer Robert le Diable aveva quarant'anni e sente la sua età, come riflesso dall'uomo al centro, indifferente all'azione e dirigendo il suo binocolo al pubblico. Ma Degas era affezionato all'opera, e soprattutto della scena qui raffigurata, dal terzo atto, in cui le suore nascono dai morti e danzano seducentemente tra le rovine di un monastero illuminato dalla luna. Il dipinto fu esposto all'inizio del 1872, la data inscritta sulla tela; Degas in seguito eseguì una versione più grande (Victoria and Albert Museum, Londra) per Jean-Baptiste Faure, che recitava nell'opera.
