Due personalità ben note nel mondo dell'arte, la scrittrice Edmond Duranty e la modella Emma Dobigny, hanno posato per questa scena di primo genere di Degas, ambientata in un ufficio, forse una piccola banca. Dalla fedele copiata stampa da corsa britannica alla protagonista femminile elegantemente vestita, richiama l'opera del collega artista James Tissot. Tuttavia, per tutti i dettagli esigenti, il soggetto di questa immagine rimane sfuggente. L'elegante abito da visita del modello, curiosamente indossato senza cappello, e l'informalità della sua posa può suggerire un rapporto familiare o intimo, ma Degas offre un indizio debole per la causa del suo "sulking".
