Zwei bekannte Persönlichkeiten in der Kunstwelt, der Schriftsteller Edmond Duranty und Modell Emma Dobigny, stellte für diese frühe Genre Szene von Degas, in einem Büro, möglicherweise eine kleine Bank. Von dem treu kopierten britischen Renndruck bis hin zum stilvoll eingerichteten weiblichen Protagonisten erinnert er sich an das Werk des Künstlers James Tissot. Doch für alle genauen Details bleibt das Thema dieses Bildes begreiflich. Das elegante Visitenkleid des Modells, das neugierig ohne Hut getragen wird, und die informelle Haltung ihrer Pose kann eine familiäre oder intime Beziehung vorschlagen, aber Degas bietet einen schwachen Hinweis auf die Ursache seiner "Sulking".
