Questo dipinto raffigura una donna che sembra aver pianto o è malato, in una sorta di momento non custodito che Degas ha esplorato nella sua arte durante tutta la sua carriera. Dipinta rapidamente e con grande economia, la sua enfasi sulla cattura di uno stato emotivo transitorio lo segna come uno studio piuttosto che un ritratto formale. Un primo proprietario, il pittore Egisto Fabbri (1866-1933), ha prestato la tela alla prima mostra di arte impressionista in Italia, tenuta al Lyceum Club di Firenze nel 1910.
