Durante los años formativos que Degas pasó trabajando en Italia, 1856 a 1859, hizo copias después de antiguos maestros, así como estudios de hombres y mujeres con traje local, ambos temas populares entre la comunidad de artistas franceses que acudieron a Roma. Esta pintura combina un estilo figural y una paleta reminiscente de Poussin con un ojo para el detalle realista, evidente en la renderización de la piel marchitada de la mujer y las manos gruñidas. Monumental e inesparable, la imagen evita el sentimentalismo pintoresco común a muchas imágenes contemporáneas de campesinos y mendigos.
