Durante gli anni formativi che Degas trascorse a lavorare in Italia, dal 1856 al 1859, fece copie dopo vecchi maestri e studi di uomini e donne in costume locale, entrambi soggetti popolari tra la comunità di artisti francesi che si affollarono a Roma. Questo dipinto combina uno stile figurale e una tavolozza che ricorda Poussin con un occhio per i dettagli realisti, evidente nel rendering della pelle spudorata della donna e le mani ghiacciate. Monumentale e sconcertante, l'immagine evita la pittoresca sentimentalità comune a molte immagini contemporanee di contadini e mendicanti.
