Edgar Degas (1834-1917) perseguì un'educazione classica presso l'École des Beaux-Arts di Parigi, seguita da un triennio di studio in Italia. Tornò a Parigi nel 1859 con l'ambizione di far rivivere il genere di pittura storico e iniziò a lavorare su cinque dipinti: La figlia di Jephthah, Semiramis costruzione Babilonia, Alexander e Bucephalus, Spartan Ragazze Incalzante Ragazzi e Scena di guerra nel Medioevo. I numerosi studi preparatori che sono sopravvissuti riflettono la lenta e difficile maturazione di queste opere. Cercando una sintesi impossibile che rinnovi il genere storico, l'artista eternamente insoddisfatto alla fine ha abbandonato le sue composizioni, lasciando la maggior parte di loro incompiute. Solo la scena di guerra nel Medioevo fu completata e presentata al Salone del 1865.
