Prellwitz è nato a South Orange, New Jersey per una famiglia socialmente prominente. Suo padre era un uomo d'affari di spicco e sua madre era la figlia di Almet Reed, uno dei fondatori della New York Central Railroad. Da 20 anni, era ben diversificata nella filosofia e conosceva il francese e il tedesco. Tra il 1889 e il 1891 frequentò brevemente l'Académie Julian dove studiò con William-Adolphe Bouguereau e Joseph-Nicolas Robert-Fleury. Prellwitz tornò a New York nel 1891 e nel corso del prossimo decennio ottenne notorietà per le sue composizioni di figura eterea basate su soggetti letterari. Nel suo autoritratto del 1909, Prellwitz guarda lo spettatore con un forte senso di determinazione e fiducia.
