Der bekannte Bariton und Sammler Jean-Baptiste Faure stellte sich im Winter 1882–83 für Manet. Unter den letzten Leinwand des Künstlers sind diese Studie und eine andere (59.129), die in Vorbereitung auf ein Porträt gemacht wurden, das zur Zeit des Todes von Manet im April 1883 unvollendet blieb.
