La pittura incompiuta di Manet è pensata per descrivere il funerale dello scrittore Charles Baudelaire, che ebbe luogo il 2 settembre 1867. L'artista, a differenza di altri amici che dovevano ancora tornare dalla vacanza o rimanere lontano a causa della minacciosa tempesta estiva, era tra i pochi lutti presenti. Questa vista del cortège funebre a piedi del Butte Mouffetard, una collina a sud-ovest di Parigi, è incorniciata dalle silhouette delle torri e delle cupole della Val de Grâce, del Panthéon, Saint-Etienne-du-Mont, e del Tour de Clovis sullo sfondo. Manet ha tenuto la foto fino alla sua morte. Nel 1894 Pissarro lo acquisì in cambio di uno dei suoi paesaggi.
