Se piensa que la pintura inacabada de Manet representa el funeral del escritor Charles Baudelaire, que tuvo lugar el 2 de septiembre de 1867. El artista, a diferencia de otros amigos que aún no habían regresado de las vacaciones o se habían alojado debido a la amenazante tormenta de verano, estaba entre los pocos duelos presentes. Esta vista del meager funeral cortège al pie del Butte Mouffetard, una colina en el suroeste de París, está enmarcada por las siluetas de las torres y cúpulas del Val de Grâce, el Panthéon, Saint-Etienne-du-Mont, y el Tour de Clovis en el fondo. Manet guardó la foto hasta su muerte. En 1894 Pissarro lo adquirió a cambio de uno de sus propios paisajes.
