Durante la guerra civile americana, la nave da guerra degli Stati Uniti Kearsarge fece dei titoli dopo aver affondato il raider confederato Alabama al largo della costa della Francia. Manet non ha testimoniato in prima persona l'evento ampiamente coperto ma ha dedicato due dipinti al soggetto: una scena della battaglia navale (Philadelphia Museum of Art) e questa immagine, spinta dalla sua successiva visita alla nave vittoriosa ad ancorare vicino a Boulogne. Erano le sue prime raffigurazioni di un evento attuale.
