Manet ha identificato la fonte di questo dipinto, il primo di diverse scene religiose, nell'iscrizione sulla roccia: il Vangelo secondo San Giovanni. Tuttavia, nel passaggio citato, la tomba di Cristo è vuota tranne due angeli. Dopo che Manet inviò la tela al Salon del 1864, si rese conto che aveva fatto una maggiore partenza dal testo, raffigurante la ferita di Cristo sul lato sbagliato. Nonostante l'avvertimento di Charles Baudelaire che avrebbe "dato il dannoso qualcosa da ridere", l'artista non ha corretto il suo errore. Infatti, i critici hanno denunciato il quadro, in particolare il realismo del corpo cadavero di Cristo.
