Pintado en el invierno de 1882–83, este estudio del barítono Jean-Baptiste Faure fue uno de los tres ejecutados en preparación para un retrato dejado sin terminar cuando Manet murió unos meses después. Anteriormente, Manet había pintado un retrato de plena longitud del cantante en el papel de Hamlet (Folkwang Museum, Essen), que sacó críticas adversas cuando se mostraba en el Salón de 1877; Faure, que poseía muchas pinturas de Manet, se negó a aceptarlo.
