Dipinto nell'inverno del 1882–83, questo studio del baritono Jean-Baptiste Faure fu uno dei tre eseguiti in preparazione di un ritratto lasciato incompiuto quando Manet morì pochi mesi dopo. In precedenza, Manet aveva dipinto un ritratto completo del cantante nel ruolo di Hamlet (Folkwang Museum, Essen), che attirò critiche avverse quando fu mostrato nel Salon del 1877; Faure, che possedeva molti dipinti di Manet, si rifiutò di accettarlo.
