Gemalt im Winter von 1882–83, war diese Studie der Bariton Jean-Baptiste Faure eine von drei ausgeführt in Vorbereitung für ein Porträt links unvollendet, als Manet einige Monate später starb. Früher hatte Manet ein Porträt des Sängers in der Rolle des Hamlet (Folkwang Museum, Essen) gemalt, das sich nachteilig kritisierte, als es im Salon von 1877 gezeigt wurde; Faure, der viele Gemälde von Manet besaß, weigerte sich, es zu akzeptieren.
