Manet mostra un gruppo della sua famiglia e amici che giocano croquet-un passatempo appena importato dall'Inghilterra - nella località alla moda di Boulogne sulla Costa Normandia. Egli evoca magistralmente la brezza marina che si infila a gonne, soffia attraverso le bandiere e provoca una donna a friggere al suo cappello. Croquet era conosciuta come un'occasione per l'amicizia tra i sessi. Manet cita un rapporto di flirt tra il suo figliastro, Léon Leenhoff, in pantaloni marroni, e un giovane artista, Jeanne Gonzalès, che si trova vicino in abiti gialli e blu alla moda.
