Manet zeigt eine Gruppe seiner Familie und Freunde spielen Croquet-a Pastime neu aus England importiert - im modischen Resort von Boulogne an der Normandie Küste. Er ruft meist die Meeresbrise hervor, die an den Röcken tugt, durch Fahnen schläft und eine Frau an ihrem Hut klauen lässt. Croquet wurde als Anlass für die Verzweiflung zwischen den Geschlechtern bekannt. Manet deutet auf eine flirtreiche Beziehung zwischen seinem Stiefsohn, Léon Leenhoff, in brauner Hose, und einem jungen Künstler Jeanne Gonzalès, der in der Nähe von modischen gelben und blauen Kleidung steht.
