I primi bozzetti di carbone stabilirono questa scena sul mare, ma dopo aver visitato la Toscana nel 1870, Edward Burne-Jones pose la gigantesca Car of Love nelle tortuose viuzze di Siena. Questo sembra essere il disegno finale, completamente lavorato su cui si basa la pittura incompiuta (Victoria and Albert Museum, Londra). Le figure vincolate e angosciate costrette a disegnare l’Auto inesorabilmente in avanti erano amari ricordi della storia d’amore condannata di Burne-Jones con la bella Maria Zambaco nel 1870, famosa per i suoi capelli rossi gloriosi e per la pelle bianca quasi fosforescente.
