Los primeros bocetos de carbón pusieron esta escena junto al mar, pero después de visitar la Toscana en 1870, Edward Burne-Jones colocó el gigantesco coche de amor en los carriles de Siena. Este parece ser el dibujo final, totalmente trabajado en el que se basa la pintura inacabada (Victoria y Albert Museum, Londres). Las figuras encuadernadas y angustiadas forzadas a dibujar el coche inexorablemente hacia adelante fueron recordatorios amargos del amor condenado de Burne-Jones con la hermosa Maria Zambaco en 1870, famosa por su ‘grande pelo rojo y piel blanca casi fósfora’.
