Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779-1851) è stato uno statista, il primo ministro degli Stati Uniti in Messico, autore e botanico. Introdusse in questo paese il fiore messicano in seguito lo chiamò: Euphorbia pulcherrima, comunemente noto come poinsettia. Malbone ritrasse anche la sorella di Poinsett, Susan e Hugh Bridport (q.v.) ritrasse Poinsett nella vita successiva.
