Multi-colored tournament poster mounted onto linen-backed cream paper. Green background. Woman in mint-green top with white collar and yellow hat with black band holding racquet in left arm is in lower-right foreground. Brown tree runs up the center of poster. To the left of the tree in the center of the poster are two men in white standing on opposite sides of a white net. At the upper left-hand side of the poster is a red building with grey-green roof and white trim. All text on poster is in black, save for signature of artist, which is in red. The Western Lawn Tennis Tournament, held in Chicago, was a run-up tournament to the U.S. National Championships. This tournament poster, believed to be the earliest surviving of its kind, was the creation of noted illustrator Edward Penfield, who used bold, simplified shapes to stunning effect.
