Intorno al 1803, Edward Savage stabilì l'incisione di una stampa raffigurante la firma della Dichiarazione di Indipendenza, ma la targa rimase incompiuta alla sua morte circa quattordici anni dopo. Le figure completate includono John Adams del Massachusetts, Roger Sherman del Connecticut, James Wilson della Pennsylvania e Thomas Jefferson della Virginia, consegnando un documento a John Hancock del Massachusetts, presidente del Congresso. Siede davanti (da sinistra a destra) sono Samuel Adams del Massachusetts, Robert Morris della Pennsylvania, Benjamin Franklin della Pennsylvania (in sedia Windsor), e Charles Carroll di Carrollton, Maryland, che, quando morì nel 1832, era l'ultimo firmatario sopravvissuto. Sulla destra è Stephen Hopkins di Rhode Island, indossando, in accordo con la pratica di Quaker, il suo cappello.
