Ein Charleston, South Carolina native, Edwin Augustus Harleston war ein Absolvent des renommierten Avery Normal Institute in Charleston und Atlanta University. In Atlanta studierte er Soziologie unter renommiertem Wissenschaftler Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois, und 1905 wurde Harleston an der Harvard University akzeptiert, um seine freie Kunstausbildung fortzusetzen. Als er jedoch in Boston ankam, änderte er seinen Geist, und stattdessen entschied er sich für die Kunstschule im Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Nach sieben Jahren Studium unter der Leitung von Künstlern wie Edmund C. Tarbell, Frank Benson und Phillip Hale kehrte Harleston als eine der Stadt nach Charleston zurück.
