Eros e Morte sono strettamente legati in questa storia dello sguardo proibito alla nudità femminile. Lydian King Kandaules esorta il suo amico Gyges a convincersi segretamente della bellezza della moglie Nyssia, e paga per l'orgoglio in suo possesso con la sua vita. Nyssia scopre il voyeur nascosto dietro la tenda del letto e, per riconquistare il suo onore, lo sfida a uccidere Kandaules e sposarla o a se stesso morire. Gyges uccide il suo amico e diventa così lo strumento di una donna forte, i ruoli di vittima e perpetratore sono invertiti, come la persona che cerca vendetta vince in questo esempio di onore coniugale. Lo spettatore come ‘voyeur’ partecipa alla disonorizzazione, e i contemporanei possono essere stati ricordati di Jakob Cats’
