Edith Harms, sua sorella, Adele, e i loro genitori vivevano attraverso la strada dallo studio di Schiele alla Hietzinger Hauptstrasse. Harms e Schiele svilupparono il loro romanticismo nel corso del 1914, nonostante il fatto che Schiele fosse ancora coinvolto con il suo modello, Wally Neuzil. Va da sé che Edith sostenne enfaticamente la fine del rapporto di Egon con Wally, che ovviamente non era un passo facile per Schiele. Egon suggerì a Wally di continuare a fare una vacanza insieme almeno una volta all'anno, ma questo era inaccettabile per Wally. Il matrimonio tra Egon e Edith ebbe luogo nel giugno 1915. Quattro giorni dopo, Schiele fu chiamato per eseguire il suo servizio militare a Praga. Edith era un compagno leale e spesso posto come suo modello. Sei mesi di gravidanza, è morta come vittima dell'influenza spagnola il 28 ottobre 1918. Dopo aver contratto la stessa malattia, Schiele la seguì tre giorni dopo.
