Vigée Le Brun partecipò al Salon del 1785 con più di dieci sottomissioni, tra cui questa rappresentazione di Calonne (1734-1802), controllore generale delle finanze. Ha un documento inscritto Au Roi (Al re), che dimostra la fiducia reale che ha goduto. Il pittore, in uno studio di carattere notevole, sottolinea la sua leggibilità. I tessuti e gli accessori che lo circondano attestano il sapiente rendering dell’artista di texture e dettagli.
