Mentre in Russia, Vigée Le Brun dipinse cinque ritratti della Grande Duchessa (1779–1826), di cui questo, destinato alla madre della sitter, rimase di proprietà dei discendenti della Gran Duchessa. Come descritto dall’artista, le “caratteristiche del soggetto erano belle e regolari, il suo volto un ovale perfetto; la sua bella carnagione... aveva una pallidezza complessivamente in armonia con l’espressione sul suo volto.” Indossa un vestito di mussola e una sciarpa che si gira intorno alla testa e sotto il mento.
