Parmi les dix enfants nés de Louis XV et de Marie Leszczynska, seuls Mesdames Adélaïde et Victoire ont survécu à la Révolution. Non mariés et approchant soixante, les aristocrates autrefois hautains émigrèrent en 1791. Ils traversèrent les Alpes en hiver et s'installèrent à Rome, où ils dépendaient en grande partie de la bonté des autres. Vigée Le Brun dépeint les deux femmes comme des citoyennes âgées dont les vêtements presque identiques suggèrent la façon dont leur vie était entrelacée.
