Después de completar su famoso retrato 1787 de Marie Antoinette y sus hijos, Vigée Le Brun pintó este trabajo, sin duda sin sentarse y probablemente por su propia iniciativa. Ella creía que habría solicitudes para otras imágenes de la reina pero al final no vendía este lienzo durante muchos años. La cara y la pose de Marie Antoinette en las dos composiciones son casi idénticas, pero aquí ha envejecido y comunica un grado de severidad real.
