Aunque nació en Cincinnati, Elizabeth Nourse se mudó en 1887 a Francia, donde pasó su larga y prolífica carrera como pintor expatriado. En 1890 Nourse viajó a Italia para una estancia prolongada visitando Grottaferrata, Tivoli, Venecia, Florencia y Roma. Esta acuarela etérea con Saint Mark’s en el fondo muestra a Nourse trabajando fuera de las puertas, no sólo un estudio pintor de madres e hijos, la obra por la que es más conocida.
