Nato ad Asunción, Careaga trascorse molti anni a vivere e a lavorare in Francia che senza dubbio influenzò le sue aspirazioni creative. Infatti, nel 1964 lui e altri artisti paraguaiani formarono il gruppo Los Novísimos [The Very New] che respinse chiaramente l'isolamento culturale e sostenne una prospettiva piÃ1 avanguardistica e internazionale.
