Nacido en Asunción, Careaga pasó muchos años viviendo y trabajando en Francia, que sin duda influyó en sus aspiraciones creativas. De hecho, para 1964 él y otros artistas paraguayos formaron el grupo Los Novísimos, que claramente rechazaba el aislamiento cultural y respaldaba una perspectiva internacional más vanguardista.
