La prima comunione segna l'inizio di un bambino nell'Eucaristia cristiana, il consumo rituale di pane e vino consacrati. La tavolozza muta di Carrière, la spazzola fluida e le forme semplificate prestano un aspetto al mondo diverso alla ragazza, avvolto nella sua veste di comunione bianca e velo. Questo dipinto e molti altri sullo stesso soggetto sono stati associati a un trittico religioso che l'artista ha creato circa 1897 (situazione attuale sconosciuta).
