Questo dipinto vigoroso si basa su un disegno Delacroix realizzato nel 1854, durante una visita di settimana alla tenuta di campagna di un cugino ad Augerville, a circa cinquanta miglia a sud di Parigi. Facendo riferimento al disegno nella sua voce diario del 27 maggio, l'artista ha menzionato di fare "sketches delle figure fantastiche nelle rocce," e ha aggiunto una frase preferita: "Neglect nothing at all which could make you great". Probabilmente fece il dipinto dopo essere tornato a Parigi.
