Questo è stato il primo trattamento di Delacroix di un soggetto tratto dai romanzi popolari di Sir Walter Scott della cavalleria medievale. L'omonimo eroe di Ivanhoe (1819), sforzandosi di lasciare il suo letto malato, ascolta la terrorizzata Rebecca mentre descrive una battaglia infuriata fuori dalla finestra. Piuttosto che mostrare la battaglia stessa, Delacroix ha cercato di stimolare l’immaginazione dello spettatore evocando la violenza attraverso i gesti dei personaggi che reagiscono ad esso. La meticolosa esecuzione della mano estesa di Rebecca sta in contrasto con il frammento dei tratti immediatamente che lo circondano e alla sua sinistra, che suggeriscono la frenesia che testimonia.
