Questo dipinto raffigura il momento nella tragedia epica di Shakespeare Amleto in cui il protagonista, che ha parlato in privato con la madre, la regina Gertrude di Danimarca, nota una figura dietro le tende del suo armadio. Subito dopo, Amleto impala il Polonio nascosto con la sua spada, e pronuncia la frase memorabile "Come ora! Un topo? Morto per un ducato, morto!" La composizione è identica a un litografo bianco e nero Delacroix realizzato per un portafoglio dedicato al gioco, che fu pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1843.
