Per padroneggiare il rendering della forma umana in pose convenzionali era un fulcro della formazione artistica nelle scuole d'arte, o accademie, motivo per cui gli studi risultanti sono conosciuti in francese come "académies". Questo studio è stato identificato come la prima "académie" di Delacroix nella pittura ad olio, prodotta mentre era allievo del pittore di storia Pierre Narcisse Guérin. Delacroix era meno interessato al contorno della figura che a trasmettere un'impressione di presenza fisica attraverso il rendering della carne umana.
