Augusto Giorgio Girardet nasceu em 28 de Novembro de 1855. Começou estudando com o pai e depois na Escola de Belas Artes de Roma. Em 1833, via para Paris especializar-se em gravura em metal.Em 1891 vem para o Brasil colaborar com a Casa da Moeda. Em 1892, por sugestão de Rodolfo Bernardelli, participou, vencendo o concurso para a cadeira de gravura de medalhas e pedras preciosas na Escola Nacional de Belas Artes do Rio de Janeiro, titular da cadeira até 1912, quando é nomeado, novamente através da competição, professor real, ensinando continuando até 1934. Naturalizou-se brasileiro e se tornou o maior medalhista no século XX.
