Verboeckhoven è stato un pittore animalier del XIX secolo, specializzato nel bestiame. In questa prospettiva, ha invertito la scala tipica della figura a terra, con conseguente uno dei suoi rari paesaggi puri. (Un paio diminutivo di cervo appare al centro inferiore.) Fu forse ispirato dal paesaggio della foresta di Ardennes, che l'artista visitò negli anni 1820.
